Bi+ Awareness Week: 5 Identities You Should Know

Bi+ Week has begun and Out in Tech is celebrating with a series focusing on the Bi+ community. While September is Bi+ Awareness Month, this week-which started on Sept. 16 and ending with Bisexual Pride Day on Sept. 23-is the center of attention as we honor the community of Bi+ people around the world.

The week was created with the goal of spreading awareness of the Bi+ community, which includes a broad range of identities including-but not limited to-mspec, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual, and of course bisexual. In essence, any person that is attracted to more than one gender is included in the Bi+ community. Since definitions of these identities are entirely personal to the individuals that identify with them, the following definitions are not exhaustive or binding.

Mspec

This is a short term for the “multi-attraction spectrum.” It is a broad categorical term used to describe individuals who are attracted to more than one gender. It is an umbrella term that can include bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, etc. or even people who don’t use a label at all. Even if they’re attracted to one particular gender more than any other – Queer Undefined.

Pansexual Pride Flag

Pansexual

Pansexual often means that individuals are able to form attractions to people without really caring about their gender – Queer Undefined.

Pansexual celebrities: Miley Cyrus, Bella Thorne, Janelle Monáe, Bob The Drag Queen, Demi Lovato

Omnisexual Pride Flag

Omnisexual

Omnisexual is an attraction to all genders; typically considered equivalent to pansexual – Queer Undefined.

Polysexual Pride Flag

Polysexual

Polysexual often means being attracted to some genders but not all. So someone could be attracted to women and nonbinary people but not men. Someone else could only be attracted to gender fluid individuals, women, and trans men – Queer Undefined.

Bisexual Pride Flag

Bisexual

Bisexual is a sexuality that experiences attraction to more than one gender. Because of the prefix, it’s a common misconception that bisexual people are only attracted to two genders. However, bisexual people have stated that it means to be attracted to more than one gender. There is a lot of overlap with other sexualities like pansexuality, but at the end of the day it’s all up to whatever you are personally comfortable with identifying as – Queer Undefined.

Bisexual celebrities: Kristen Stewart, Megan Fox, Victoria Monét, Megan Thee Stallion
